Organic hemp: How sustainable is CBD?

Hemp is one of the oldest cultivated plants in history. This versatile all-rounder has been used for thousands of years in numerous products such as paper, rope, sails and even clothing. From a medical point of view, the CBD of the non-psychoactive cannabis plant in particular has been attracting great interest for centuries.

Recently, CBD has become extremely popular, especially among athletes and health-conscious people with an active lifestyle. This holistic lifestyle is often accompanied by an increased environmental awareness. Therefore, many people are increasingly paying attention to sustainability when choosing their CBD product. But how sustainable is CBD actually? And what aspects should you pay attention to before buying a sustainable CBD product?

Power-guzzling CBD indoor farms?

Hemp is sustainable in many ways. The cannabis plant is not only extremely easy to grow, but also very productive. However, the female, non-psychoactive cannabis plants used to extract CBD often have to be grown indoors in our latitudes. This ensures that commercial operations can harvest all year round, regardless of the weather, but the sunlight in the halls has to be replaced by artificial light sources. The "green" alternative to conventional power guzzlers in indoor cultivation are special energy-saving LED lamps. This means that a lot of resources can be saved and emissions prevented when growing CBD hemp.

But indoor cultivation under laboratory conditions also has positive factors for the environment. In contrast to industrial hemp fields, not only can the use of pesticides or other pest control methods be completely avoided, but it can also be ensured that the CBD oils are free of contaminants and chemical residues. In addition, plant residues can be used as biomass in power plants to generate renewable energy. The remains of the stems are used to make bedding for animals.

Gentle CBD extraction

The most sustainable and efficient method of extracting CBD from hemp plants is extraction using CO2 extraction. Not only is it the most environmentally friendly of all methods, it also protects all of the valuable cannabinoid compounds, terpenes and flavonoids of the hemp plants.

But not only the CBD should be extracted using a gentle, sustainable process, the carrier oil used should also come from an organically certified cultivation. In order to make the highly concentrated CBD easier to dose in everyday life, it is added to a carrier oil - the CBD oil. Ideally, a gentle, cold-pressed organic hemp oil without any other additives is used for this.

Which CBD packaging is sustainable?

In love and with CBD, inner values are what counts. However, in contrast to the choice of partner, external factors are also very important when it comes to sustainable CBD products. Even the most resource-efficient CBD concentrate becomes an ecological dilemma when packaged in plastic. The CBD oil is therefore best bottled in purple glass bottles. These not only protect the valuable CBD from UV rays, but are also free of harmful substances, unlike plastic containers.

Sustainable CBD: What should you consider before buying?

Anyone who values the sustainability of the CBD product should definitely look at the cultivation and production chains before buying. Reputable CBD shops not only guarantee the quality of their product through regular content analyses - they also make all processes publicly visible. If any point is still unclear, it is always a good idea to clarify any questions in advance via the contact field and, if necessary, have the CBD shops attest to them with receipts.
